10 minute chess is not enough for an improving player

You can not really calculate well in this time control. It's barely worth analysing because you simply didn't have enough time. My last game was kind an example of this... One of so many. I am always looking for big knockouts, trying to avoid blunders and spot tactics.

For an classical otb tournament, i am not sure if 10 minute game helps anymore.

Any opinions?

Will I have enough opponents willing to play 30 min or 15+10 chess?

What is your experience?

Oh my lord just play 30 minutes or 2 hours time control

Or just leave chess.com if you’re not happy no one will oppose

Chess is an online game. Online games can't last that long.

For 1900's or ancient kings, they had too much of free time for their day to play chess while sipping their tobacco pipe.🪈

"You can not really calculate well in this time control." ++ Right.

"It's barely worth analysing because you simply didn't have enough time." ++ Right.

"I am always looking for big knockouts, trying to avoid blunders and spot tactics." ++ Yes.

"For an classical otb tournament, i am not sure if 10 minute game helps anymore." ++ No.

"Will I have enough opponents willing to play 30 min or 15+10 chess?"
++ Above 2000 it gets hard to get paired for 15|10,
though that is the official rapid time control like for the World Rapid Championship.
10|0 is officially still blitz, though chess.com calls it rapid.

I'm 100% agree with your opinion. I was always running out of time when I tried to do exact calculations while playing a 10-minute game.

I think 10 min games are bad for improving. It is better than blitz, but it is just long time blitz... it teaches me how to play without deep calculation😔

I love rapid. Especially 10 minute.

10 minutes isn't rapid. It's blitz. You need to play proper rapid rates of play such as 20 minutes or 30 minutes for all the moves, in order to improve. No doubt about what I'm saying.

You just have to find the opponents.

I didn't actually know that. It's just obvious that 10 mins is blitz.

Or it should be for anyone with an understanding of the game.

10 min rapid is basically blitz chess 3|0 is better if you want to play rapid I recommend otb tournaments

My son plays 3/0 all the time but he's only here for relaxation and a bit of fun. Don't think he thinks he's going to improve much.

Avatar of BigChessplayer665

I improve a lot I play only 3|0 a couple weeks ago I improved from 2000 to 2100-2200

I think I'm seeing improvement but you can prove me wrong that blitz is useless (if you want you could challenge me to a 15|10 rapid game ) there are many different ways to improve including blitz

For beginners, it is also unreasonable because if you are just starting out, it is difficult to manage both the board and time due to lack of proficiency.

Avatar of BigChessplayer665

That's true you need the time to think but 60 min(or classical ) esc games are also bad since you can't get enough games in you need enough time +games to improve you focus too much on one you plument

I think 10+5 or 15/10 is perfect for beginners (I think 5|3 is also really good it's my personal favorite time control )

Jospem is your friend on chess.com. Explains why your comment is not relevant at all.

"It's just obvious that 10 mins is blitz."
++ It is not obvious, it is borderline.
'B.1 A ‘blitz’ game is one where all the moves must be completed in a fixed time of 10 minutes or less for each player; or the allotted time plus 60 times any increment is 10 minutes or less for each player.'

My son is stuck at 1400 but he's in a job where he has to use his mind constantly and he isn't interested in trying to improve at chess. I'd like a few games with you but maybe not just now if it's to be rated. That would be good. The reason is that I had quite a good rapid grade here and they didn't tell me when they switched 10 minutes to rapid. I hadn't played rapid for ages and all of a sudden, I was messing about in blitz and noticed I'd lost 150 points off my rapid. They really are useless here in many respects.

It's same again. I haven't played rapid for several years and if I lost then I'd lose maybe 100 points for one game. It's the stupid system they have here. It isn't ELO of course. Some silly system called Glicko, which is mathematically unsound.

When it is 2000+ it is not enough time it is either 3|0 5|3 10/5 or longer it's because of time pressure in 10|0 is too frustrating if your opponent is up two min on the clock you are most likely going to lose

Also I'm fine if it is unrated I actually don't like playing rated rapid

agreed playing chess online is not worth it just play at OTB tournaments they have much better time control and the atmosphere is much better if you want to get in the zone
