Usually in OTB tournaments it's with increments so players have enough thinking time in the endgame. Like 10+5 or 30+5, etc.
10 minute games vs 10+5 minute games
@1
"in tournaments they use a timer so that players don't take too long making moves" ++ Yes.
"10 minute games are the most popular on this site, is that the usual amount of time chess tournaments give to players?" ++ No. Classical tournaments are 90|30 or slower,
the Rapid World Championship is 15|10, the World Blitz Championship is 3|2.
"thoughts on 10 minute games with 5 seconds given for every turn you make?"
++ 10|5 is better than 10|0, but 15|10 is even better.
"Isn't it more fair for the stronger chess player if they got 5 seconds every turn?"
++ No, it is fair for the slower player getting increment every turn:
that allows to win a winning position or draw a drawing position without losing on time.
It keeps the focus on the game itself and its aim to checkmate the opponent,
instead of shifting the focus towards playing faster and winning on time.
I am somewhat new to playing online chess and chess with a timer. In the past I just played normally without a timer with friends or family, but in tournaments they use a timer so that players don't take too long making moves. From what I heard apparently the 10 minute games are the most popular on this site, is that the usual amount of time chess tournaments give to players? What are your guys thoughts on 10 minute games with 5 seconds given for every turn you make? Isn't it more fair for the stronger chess player if they got 5 seconds every turn?
