To get better at blitz, you need to get better at longer games.

play atleast 30|30 and use the time to see what you are doing.

5 to 10 minute games are pretty short, and don't help your chess. While tactics may bump your blitz, it is not a good way to improve. If you have a higher rapid rating, it reflects more of your ability anyway. If you can get 1500 rapid, it is more of a accomplishment.

As for getting higher in blitz, there are tactics, but really you should just not hang pieces and notice when your opponent hangs pieces. If you can do this, you can squeeze up to 1200 easy, after that you'll need to go after more improvement methods.

A list will be displayed:

  • Play longer games (30|30 or more) make sure to use your time and not blitz them out
  • Play a lot of tactics, and take them slow, calculation is key
  • Analyze your long games after you play them, short games are not worth analyzing.
  • Do blindfold chess occasionally, it improves visibility of the board.
  • Read 1 book on endings, and one book on tactics (see below for suggestions)
  • If you have one, use a real board to play your long games, it helps as well.
  • Study openings only after you have completed the above tasks

Book suggestions: Seirawan's Winning Chess Tactics. Practical Chess Endings by Paul Keres. You can also read Silman's endgame manual, but it is not as good as Keres' in my opinion.

If you have trouble deciding upon a opening, play the London as white and French/Queens gambit declined as black, these are popular beginner openings and do not require much studying.

For game analysis, chess.com has a engine for it, but it can be debilitating without a membership as quick analysis is terrible. For a full copy of stockfish on Windows or Linux here are some guides:

I also have created a club for crowd source analysis, feel free to join and post your games:
