Theory-Theory-Theory and ... did I forget to tell you? Theory. Learning it and applying it 100% of the time in their games. Also, good coaching. Necessary :)

Nxavar, not true at all.

Take a look at a tournament some time. You'll see the U1600 crowd racing through the opening, playing theoretically sharp lines for 15 moves in 5 minutes while the masters are poring over their games, being extremely careful. Even though they may play the theoretical moves, they usually take their time because they are considering the various move-order tricks that spring up in the opening, and they are still looking for improvements.

For anyone who thinks the top-flight games are merely a matter of memorisation, playing in an actual (OTB) tournament should cure you of that delusion.

The key distinction between an expert (such as myself) or master and a class player is usually in how well the player can concentrate over the course of the the entire game. Experts and masters tend to ratchet up the pressure throughout the game, seeking the win even in quiet, even endgames. I rarely see that sort of pressure applied when I face class players, and when I do I know that class player is likely to become an expert!

Misunderstanding. Theory not just on opening lines but on everything! Watch a video by GM Dzindzichashivili (even the free 3:00 can give you a clue) and you'll know what I mean.
