1350 trying to improve

Hey, this is my first post.

I am around 1350-1400 in bliz and i have been playing almost a year. I would really like to improve. What i do know to improve is to watch gm play chess, i do puzzle and i use engine to analyze my games and misstake. But if anyone is up for it, if you would take a look at my past games and see and give idea what i should work on. Maybe i sometimes play to passive or i am very bad to spot good pawnbreaks to open up.

Also one idea i have is to play some games vs 1800-2000. So i can learn by playing stronger players, if anyone is up for it.

Im starting to loose my chess confident. I just feel bad. Like when i hit 1000 and 1200 i feelt good but now i just feel bad. I see so many bad moves in my games. Also when you hear stories of people hitting 1800 on there first year, well that dosnt really make you feel better. One issue is that i struggle to remember the correct moves, which is kinda very needed in blitz, because you dont wanna get stuck in a bad position.

Okey so today i tried to play one 45+45. I usally play very fast but i figured if i play slower i wont blunder that much. I manage to win in the end with some tactics winning the opponents knight by sacrificing a pawn.

I dont have the chess preimium anymore so i cant see what i missed. But if anyone wanna give some feedback? Also this game i have to admit i really tried hard to win and it was very hard.

At 51 i was planning on a mate with knight and rook, but i figured that he could sacrifce the rook to get a stalemate so i change plans there.

"I am around 1350-1400 in bliz" ++ Do not play blitz if you want to improve, play 15|10 rapid.

"What i do know to improve is to watch gm play chess"
++ Watching is not enough, study annotated grandmaster games.

"i do puzzle" ++ That is good.

"i use engine to analyze my games and misstake" ++ That is good.

"i struggle to remember the correct moves"
++ You do not need to remember anything, you need to think.

"needed in blitz" ++ Do not play blitz if you want to improve, play 15|10.

"you dont wanna get stuck in a bad position"
++ You do not get a bad position if you play carefully and you think before you move.

"if i play slower i wont blunder that much." ++ True.

"I manage to win in the end with some tactics" ++ Most games are won by tactics.

"I dont have the chess preimium anymore so i cant see what i missed."
++ Analyse lost games only. Analysis of 1 lost game per day is OK.

"i really tried hard to win" ++ That is how you should always play.

"At 51 i was planning on a mate with knight and rook, but i figured that he could sacrifce the rook to get a stalemate so i change plans there."
++ Very good. Always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it.

I have watched some Gotham YouTube videos from the "How to win at chess" series. "Levy" (the Youtuber) is an IM and in these videos he plays subscribers at different levels (below 1000 up to higher rating than himself but mostly in the range 1100-1800) in 10 min games. During the games he goes through the thought process and explain the theory behind the moves he plays. And he also talks a about the mistakes that the opponents do and what they could have done different.

I'm not at your level (yet) but I think watching these videos really helped me to improve my play.

Thanks alot for all this advice. I have started to play a few dailys. But yes i will play some more rapid to. I also play on Lichess so once i hit 1500 i wanted to protect that rating so i played rapid on lichess instead to practice. I know it sounds kinda silly but its my highest rating so far.

How many rapid games per day do you recommend?

"Watching is not enough, study annotated grandmaster games." oh that i have not done ever, Where can i find games like that?

Yeah gotham i have watched a little. I prefer Hikaru or Finegold. But i have to say that Finegold is better for learning then Hikaru. Because Finegolds move i can understand while i dont understand Hikarus moves. So if they are to strong it might be worse to watch if you dont understand it.

Also nice to see that you are from Sweden to.

If you go to chess.com/blogs, you can find many good annotated games.

@jimemy

A good YouTuber for improving is Daniel Naroditsky. I’d say he’s much better than gothamchess or hikaru, both of whom seem to focus more on the play-chess-for-entertainment audience. Naroditsky’s speedruns Feature various openings, even weird ones, and he tries to break down every single move.

Even though my rating is higher than most of his opponents, I can still learn a little something just by clicking any random video of his.

Blogs have some great information; I have to agree.  However what you really need is a coach / trainer that can tailor your learning to what you actually need rather than just 'here's how chess works'.  (if that makes any sense at all).

Carry on.

I agree, but not everyone feels like that chess improvement is worth spending money on a coach.

There are many free coaches and clubs out there.  You just have to look really hard to find them anymore.  grin.png

oh my i just beat a 2100+ on lichess, https://lichess.org/5cIoa7IPwdwp my highest win ever. (a very non exciting win do but still)

Yeah about i coach it would be very nice to have one but i really have no money to spend on this things. But maybe one day i will try to go to a chessclub. Maybe they have some stronger players that one can play vs and learn from,
