Genius Yi Wei reveals himself to the world
Nice fix. FancyKnight. I didn't watch the interview, but when Wang Hao said he was playing 2700 level, I suspect he was not simply referring to the world cup, but instead meant in Chinese super tournament and league play or training games amongst Chinese chess team, Wei Yi regularly played at 2700 level.

Thes are ratings of other 14 year olds. These are on their birthdays. Just to compare.
Wei: 2530.
Karjakin: 2566. Why's he on this list? He's the the youngest GM so far.
Carlsen: 2581.
Polgar: 2540.
Anand: couldn't find.
Kramnik: couldn't find. I'm sure I could locate them but I don't feel like spending the time right now.
Fischer: there were no ratings in 1957 but at this age he won the U.S. championship so it's clear he was at least 2500 strength.
Just to compare where each were at the same age. Wei is in good company.

Perhaps when the top players get more book on Wei's playing style, he will need to work harder to learn theirs. If not he might just be a shooting star, asterisk in chess.

Agree. It's not an OTB brilliancy but just "lucky" preparation. And Shirov would not notice it, because he faced a kid of 14 years old.
I don't think Shirov will fall into the same trap the 2nd time.

You old men when you die,
your knowledge shall not die.
After rebirth you will do miracles,
Even more intense likes of this.
Love

I had never seen that sacrifice in that position before so I checked with my chessbase and the Bxb5 move was taken from Bologdan v Shirov from 2005. So then this Chinese kid comes and plays the same move from a Shirov game of 8 years ago against Shirov and then says that he is improvising, unprepared, blah, blah. C'mon. Prepared variation that the kid played really well. Kudos to him and I hope he becomes a 3000 player, but this is not some OTB brilliancy but a bunch of great preparation. If I was going to play Shirov, I would prepare like crazy too.
He would be scared of me. Yeah.
He said that he had prepared for Shirov to repeat his fourteenth move from the win against Bologan (14...Be7), but Shirov deviated with 14...Bxd6. At that point, Wei said that he was improvising.
Clearly, he had studied Shirov's games in preparation for the match, and this preparation paid dividends.

Well,I actualy hate studying chess and have done as little as I can get away with (my dad likes me to train a little) and my rating is 1700.I know this is a lot less than this guys rating must be,but still. If some 8 year old kid came along with an IQ of 250,he could in a very short time learn to play chess and beat most of us!!
I'm certain he gets the best training they have. Just look at his tournament history. He's not a new kid on the block, he's been around.
& they both did seem a little secretive, that's fine. People shouldn't read too much into that interview, a lot of the questions & answers may not have been understood by both sides.
