I guess he is just trying to say that obsession with chess (as with anything else but religion) can drive ppl crazy and ruin their lives.....he is actually right about that!
It's full of highly polarised semi-fiction, such as "Steinitz initiated scientific chess analysis", whereas it was Louis Paulsen, half a generation before. Clearly, the author is trying to create false polarities in the minds of the readership, making out that all the very best players became lunatics.
