103 degrees. hot start to the open!
You should set up a Bar in there !
Woohoo! Finally got my 1st point on day 3 & his rating was a mere 400 points higher than mine! For a reward I'll probably get someone about 650 points higher tonight; man the fun just never stops!
I'm having a lot of fun here...lost round 4, but my opponent was 630 points higher...I can beat a +400, but more than that, probably not, unless they make an egregious (I love that word) blunder. So far nobody has...
Actually my Game 4 opponent was only 530 higher; tonight my Game 5 opponent is 640 points higher; I lost of course, but at least we went clear to endgame; I gave him a run for his money!
Round 6 = another loss (but a tough one!) -- interestingly, all 6 of my opponents are rated from 400 to 800 points higher than me! As I said before, the fun just never stops!
Nope, no chance at all to go to the skittles room...just too many things going on in my life to be able to take the time. I'll just have to analyze when I have the time (on the computer).
I find it extremely aggrivating/upsetting just how many players DO NOT bring clocks to this match & probably a third of the clocks there are old wind-up analog clocks. In fact, the fellows right next to me last night used a cheesy old BHB wind-up which didn't even work! I wanted to slap 'em both! But I manfully refrained. Way to go, USCF...
Well, Round 7 is done & gone...even tho I lost (to a player rated almost 500 points higher), it went 59 moves & I almost weasled a stalemate out of it--I think this weekend should turn out pretty good for yours truly.
The US Open still provides sets, right? They just don't provide clocks. Given the relative costs of a plastic set and a digital chess clock, and the large number of players, I can't really blame them. What organizer wants to keep track of two hundred or so $100 dollar chess clocks, over two weeks? I can see more than a few players being tempted to take a clock home as a consolation prize after a loss.
You can always refuse to play on non-standard equipment, though, like Day-Glo boards or Civil War Commemorative sets or clocks powered by rabid hamsters on wheels.
Gee, I feel so deprived: I've never seen any hamster-powered clocks (rabid or otherwise).
Now Round 8 is history (for me)...got my 2nd win against a very nice lady originally from Germany ... just 1 more game on Sunday (@ 3PM, a nice change from 7PM!).
and here in Australia and NZ the clubs and the tournament organisers provide them.
Guess that must be pretty easy to do when there are only 3 or 4 players...
I'd love to go to a US Open, but holding these big national events in towns that are major extremities of the US (the great northwest is about 2,000 miles away from I'd say 75% of the population of the US) is just unreasonable to go to for all except GMs and IMs. Next years (in Madison, WI) is much more accessible.
I've played on a set in which my opponent brought bright green and orange pieces. I did not mind and won in the time scramble.
Originally, I thought the US Open was being set in Canada when I saw it was advertised being held in Vancouver, and not listing the state. I almost got the location right!
By the way there's a US 2051 sitting on 6.5/8, who obviously had fortuitous pairings for 7 rounds as well as a great performance including an 8th round win against the strong FM Boorchess.
Maybe the US Open will be held in Philadelphia someday, I hope.
There's always the World Open which is usually in Phili. It's the only big tournament I've ever been to.
Not for the next few years. There is the Philadelphia Open in April, the National Chess Congress in November, and the Liberty Bell Open in January. All CCA events of course.
I liked the Delaware Valley Open, but there was not one last year.

Actually, the US Open doesn't get to the Left Coast very often...
Ah. I see it now. Thanks. Maybe they will post games in the near future.
