2D or 3D, does it matter?

I've never been to a tournament or played against someone with physical peices. there is a chess club 40 mins away called chess castle, I learned about it in a John Bartholomew video (I happen to live in Minnesota, where he is from) would it be worth going there? does 2D, 3D or any of those factors matter?

I tend to see tactics much more easily on a 2D board, probably because that's what I play with 99% of the time.
