Why is it stated that there is 3 days time to make a move in a longer online game when practically you can use endless amount of time by using the "vacation"-mode after the 3 days?

Whining? I don't think so. I doubt you even know what I am writing about.

Atleast the "vacation"-time should be somehow defined. I would be glad to get a comment on this from the Chess.com support.

You dont have unlimited vacation

2 months? But that is completely another time-control then?

Avatar of Burncard

I am writing about this because clearly some player are using the "vacation" as a time-control.

Players i meant...

Some players do abuse it which is why I only play in “No Vacation” tournaments.

Does vacation get abused? You betcha.  But what i have never understood about this complaint is this.  It doesn't take, or waste any of your time.  When you login to chess.com you get a notification if you need to move or not.  If you dont login on a daily basis you can get an email notification.  And yet this is constantly complained about.

The main reason people complain about the abuse of vacation is because it delays everyone moving on to the next round in tournaments. Otherwise it’s just a minor annoyance.

Years ago i took 3 weeks vacation and went to London.   I went on vacation, and even included a message why.  Did that matter to the people i was playing? Nope.  They all started whining an complaining about how i was stalling, cheating, purposely making them  wait, "I'm going to report you." Online chess is the weird retarded brother of OTB chess.

Noe that is a valid point.  I dont play online tournaments, but i believe those types of players can be reported, and if it is obvious they are stalling the game can be adjudicated.

You did the right thing by notifying what was going on, which is not abuse, so they had no reason to whine about it.

I’m in a game right now (thankfully a no vacation tournament) with a forced mate in two and despite my opponent having been online a few times he seems to be letting his time tick down. It’s annoying, but perfectly legal.  If it was happening in a vacation allowed situation and he went on vacation, that would really piss me off.

If you just earn to accept online chess as the retarded brother of real chess, you'll be fine :-)

Being anonymous is a negatively powerful motivator for some people.  Their is a reason people dont act in person, how they do online.

People do go on holidays. One can also get ill, overloaded with work, etc. That's why this feature exists. It is only abused when used to stall hopelessly lost games.

The site allows vacation, in fact automatically places premium members on vacation when low on time in one or more of their games, and doesn't allow the setting to be disabled.

The site also has a very specific definition of what is considered vacation abuse: https://support.chess.com/article/639-what-is-vacation-abuse

It's something that comes with Daily games, unless you only join no-vacation tournaments.

Thank you all for commenting on my question! However in my mind It is pretty long 70 moves game if every move takes extra x-days of moves. Something many people probably did not sign for when seeing that there is 3daymove chess game available.

Avatar of Burncard

I still would appreiciate a clarification on this from Chess.com

Avatar of Burncard

As a suggestion why not allowing 3 vacation during a one game?
