1.Nc3 is not a crazy move I can see why magnus aa used it on occasions its as good as any first moves by white, once used by Ove Ekebjaerg in the world correspondence chess championships on ICCF to great effect, Magnus would probably have studied those games, in simple terms an example is 1 Nc3,d5

1.Nc3,d5 2,e4 and black is not going much from ...d4 in view of 3.Ne2 where the Knight switches to the Kings side to g3 and white can play around the black pawn chain!
