Haven't you found yourself in a game where you are doing really good until you realize you are playing a +200, then you start completely sucking?or the other way around? Do you know of a way to disable the screen showing the opponents' rating? If not, do you think it would be a useful button? Has it affected your game?

This affects me enormously. I find it very irritating! Against stronger players I regularly don't punish obviously bad moves because I figure that if I can see that it's bad and how to refute it then they can too. Therefore there must be something else at work here that I've missed. It's a constant problem for me.

I don't know of a way of doing what you ask. I'm not sure if I would do it or not even if it were possible. Personally I'd rather overcome my problem another way.

A read a book recently that stated simply, 'Question authority.' It talks about how countless variations, openings, etc written in books by grandmasters has been proven wrong since computer analysis came out or they've been refuted. Never trust your opponent to know what he's doing. If he's wrong and you exploit it, you've won, if there's a clear refutation and you lose, that's a pretty good lesson. If you get hit by Legal's mate or the Giachino Greco, you probably won't get hit with it again

Also, I would love that option too actually.

Sometimes I'll start playing a 1600 and not taking things seriously and then I'll start playing silly moves. I've had to catch myself before

I guess in a deeper thought the fact that you are playing a game that is entirely about "the mind" you should be smart enough to know there possibility that you are underestimating yourself and realize that you are playing another human that could maybe (for his/her rating) not that easily but still make any number of mistakes and play up to your limitations (time and count), capabilities and hope your expertise as big or small as it might be shows off!!

i think it would be an interesting suggestion

It's one of those things that would be convenient but probably not overall best for one's chess. This is a psychological thing which has to be dealt with eventually. It's unlikely every opponent you play in tournament will be roughly the same rating as you.

Just don't look at your opponent's rating. Problem solved, case closed.

That's like not thinking of a purple elephant.

No, but maybe that's because I always look at the rating.

But I have noticed when playing unrated in the past, that in general lower rated players seem to play better when they don't know my rating.
