Is anyone at all familiar with the London Terrace Chess Club which, despite its name, was located in NYC and managed (owned?) by Bill and Kathryn Slater?

Hi Sarah Beth! The London Terrace Club was slightly before my time. I did know Bill Slater when he was the day manager at the Marshall Chess Club, however. His wife, Kathy was at one time one of the highest rated women players in the country. The name refers to the London Terrace apartment complex in the Chelsea area of Manhattan where I believe the Slaters lived and where the club met. The club would occasionally enter teams in the old NY Metropolitan Chess League, which in its day was one of the premier competitions in the US. BTW, while Bill was the day manager at the Marshall, the evening manager was Joe Pandolfini, Bruce's father.

Is that the same Slater that coughed up a 100 grand to make Fischer play in '72?

ardy53

No..that was Jim Slater, a British financier who died recently.

Thanks ardy53.  That's something.  I didn't know Bruce's father managed Marshall's. The part about competing in the Manhattan League might get me somewhere.
