A special rule with the draw by repetition ?

Sort:

Hi everybody,

I have just finished a game with a quite strange situation, a repetition of around 70 turn, without draw (whereas 3 is suffisient). See this link

(turn 40 to 110)

Is there a special rule which i don't know or just a informatic bug ?

You need to claim the draw yourself after three repetitions, it isn't automatic.

Ah ok my opponent were apparently more careful than me.

Yes, the draw can be claimed by either player, but only while the position is still one that has shown up at least twice before.  If another move is made and now the position is not one that is repeated 3 or more times, the opportunity to claim the draw is lost.

That means if your oppoent is expecting you'll make a move that brings up the possibility of claiming a draw and he doesn't want you to be able to claim it, he'll try to make his next move faster than you can click to claim the draw.

By the way, when a draw can be claimed, the button that usually says "offer draw" will change to "claim draw".  It's easy to miss-- no flashing lights or buzzers or anything to alert you that the repetition requirement is satisfied for the current position.
