Abandon rather than resign

I know there may be numerous reasons someone abandons a game, so it would hard to police… BUT… I can’t help but feel that there should be some recourse against a player who is playing sufficiently timely or even fast moves (ie, no apparent connection issues) who then disappears once put in a disadvantageous position. If you lack the etiquette to resign rather than abandon then you shouldn’t play in public with other people. Petulant players should stick to the bots.

Am I the only one who thinks fragile ego isn’t a sufficient reason to abandon.

I have long been of the opinion that chess.com should mirror the server, and have the jerks seperated out into their own pool, so that after a while jerks only get paired against other jerks.

The same principle would work with engine monkeys. Instead of banning them, just put them into a seperate pool so that engine monkeys can only get games against other engine monkeys.

It already kind of works that way.

Thanks for that. I suppose I never really dug into the policy because I just assumed other adults would behave like adults. Shame on me. Thanks again for the link.

I have a suggestion for the app: there are lots of abandonments during losing positions. You have a pretty good job of editing the rules so players aren't stuck for too long (the half-game before 10 moves, etc). However, another way to improve it may be to reduce the number of touches to resign. Right now on mobile it is 3 touches. Menu, resign, and confirm. What if there was a swipe method, then confirm? Or some other way to make it 2. Then it would feel less like returning the cart to the store. The kind of thing everyone should do, but a lot just don't. Thanks for reading.
