If people with aids die from "flu or something", which would not kill them but for the presence of aids, it is perfectly reasonable to say that they have died of aids.

I didn't kill that guy. He died because he suffocated, coincidentally after he drank that curare mixture I gave him. And, really, he didn't die from suffocating: he died because his cells did not get enough oxygene through blood.
