accusations of cheating...

The client-side code sends the move and the time taken for the move, probably some kind of keep-alive, and potentially chat or console commands (if there are any to send), which are most likely sent in separate packets from the moves.

That data gets sent to the server. The client doesn't communicate directly with the other client. The server then sends the pertinent info to the other client.

While chess is real-time, it is turn-based. Lag all you want, your opponent's clock won't start until the server receives your move, handles lag correction, and sends it on.

One could potentially alter data that gets sent from their client, but as I said there are ways to mitigate that, though I don't know how robust that process is in the site's implementation. And again, that doesn't impact the other player.

I won't say that the server itself can't be compromised, but that is a completely different process than altering timestamps or lagging.

That all said, this has went much farther than it probably should have in the general forum. If you would like to discuss more, there is a topic in the Cheating Forum group, that was started late last year,  that would be a more appropriate place (or even a new topic there).

Have a good night.

Maybe I should report this situation - (see 2 posts prior) I looked at the games of this particular opponent again and except for one move  (which was still a good move and relatively high ranked), all the moves were among the top choices of the computer engines or opening book moves.

Note that the report should be made here (using "Report Abuse"):

https://support.chess.com/customer/portal/emails/new

and not in public forums.

Apologies if you already knew about the above (many people do not).

To clarify:  when I said this particular opponent, I was referring to someone on Gameknot not someone on chess.com.

Maybe I am naive or blessed but I have encountered very little suspicious activity on chess.com.
