Chess is for everyone be the highly intelligent ones or the ones who just need something interesting to occupy themselves with.
When chess being taught the following are learnt:
01 Name of pieces
02 How they move
03 Checkmate.
The special moves of Castling, Capture en passant and Pawn Promotion may be taught after a few days of play.
Many people who have learnt the above have quit the game because they just lost a couple of games to those who taught them the game.
This is because the game may have been taught by parent to child or sibling to younger sibling and after teaching the above the player who taught the game may have played his / her best and defeated the one who was yet to get used to what to do in the chessboard.
It is due to the erroneous understanding that the beginner who has learnt the above has nothing more to learn and should play from there that has led to those who teach them playing a merciless game and thus destroying the confidence of the beginner.
Although "teaching" chess involves only the name of the pieces, how they move and checkmate on knowing these things alone one cannot play a full game with all the 16 pieces.
In the initial stage a beginner must be made to know what to do when his / her piece is en prise. It has to either move away or be supported by another piece or the attacking line should be blocked. Such knowledge should be imparted while the game is taking place. Right on day one someone who has just learnt the basics may not even know that his / her piece is en prise at all.
The desire to win by the player who has taught the game has to be put aside for a while unless the one who has taught the game wants to destroy the confidence of the new player. The desire to guide what should be done when a piece is en prise should replace the desire to win.
With a few games where such dos and don'ts are shown the new player gets to know what to do during a game and gradually tends to take care of his / her pieces.
