Alekhines Gun actual use

Ok. So I've seen Alekhine's gun. I have heard of Alekhine's gun, but what the heck does it ACTUALLY DO?!? IS the job of Alekhine's gun just to control a whole vertical row? Will someone give me a game where they not only loaded the gun but used it too?

The problem is if it is hard to defend three attackers on one file generally. It is especially potent if aligned with queen or king
