Ok so your studies are suffering but how about your chess game, are you getting better?
The way I look at it is there are a lot of worse things to be addicted to. Chess is stimulation for the mind, unlike a lot of other computer games and does no harm whatsoever to your body. Whether it harms your relationships or not depends on how well you hide when you play!

This is true & really quite funny !! There are definitly worst evils on this planet than CHess ! Someone please tell my wife that..........
I just got into Chess and feel I am addicted, I play it on my DS, I play here on Chess.com. I bought 2 chess sets already (Tournament & Transforners
) and I have no live people to play with so. I guess I'm addicted too, but I don't care...then again I don't have a wife either.
This is a great topic. I am totally addicted to chess. Here's why. I used to play when I was much younger and lost touch with the game after I became a musician. I got back into it years later because I was was at a point in my life where I needed a a foothold on sanity (I was going through cancer treatment and needed something to take me away from the brutal treatment). Chess is a place I can go to when I need to get lost from the pressures of life. It's like a drug to me. I love the game on so many levels, especially the learning process. Learning the game is an on going thing and I don't mind the losses I suffer because I can learn from them. Fridays and the day i lounge in bed and play chess all day. It's great, I shut the world out and play chess. I love the challange and the reward for lessons learned well. I am a chess bum and a chess junkie. I put off my PhD program for another year because I'd rather improve my game. Hell, I schedule shows with my band around chess. I'm into the game hook, line and sinker. I hav a serious hess addiction.

Hey Hugh, just like you, I played alot as a kid and then stopped playing for many years......one day I just felt compelled to start playing again, bought myself a really nice board and pieces ( the fischer -spassky Rejvak 11 set from house of staunton ) and then found Chess.com . I don't know why I stopped playing for so many years but am sooo glad I started again, it really is the greatest game ever invented. I don't know much about the history of Chess but whoever came up withthis game is truly a genius !! No other game is as timeless, complicated, challenging or addictive. BTW I was in San Fran last week for a menu sampling trip ( I'm a Chef) and it really is a great city ! Ate at Gary danko, Coi, Quince etc. ....awesome stuff :)
Well I've had plenty of trouble with my Gf because of chess. Specially on sundays when I visit her at her parent's house and end up playing endless chess games (like 6 or more long games in a row) Vs her brother. And she will go something like "You seem to be in love with my brother instead of me.. can't you just play 1 game??"
but well... I'm in love with Chess too, and I can't resist the joy of bringing that guy down.
She had to go as far as crying; for me to promise not to play more than 2 games in a row. But I'll hold on to that; I really don't want to ruin a relationship over a board game.
Im getting up in the middle of the night to go on the computer, and study the Sicilian defense, and it's many different variations. lol
Yes, I too am a chess addict!

yes there is,just tell your wife that you understand, she's a chess widow and the queen is always on the board, while your wife can never be replaced by a game, mine is used to it already and I also play dominoes, she doesn't play any games!
My wife calls home, I answer, sound distracted, I'm playing live Chess, she asks " are you playing Chess?" I lie , instantly feeling guilty, tell her I'm doing ANYTHING but playing chess ! LOL.....it's already a sore spot between us, should I feel guilty for playing chess ? Everytme I get near a computer I feel I have to check my games ! Am I the olny one ?
