I hear a lot from men that they are having marriage/relationships issues due to chess addiction... I just don't get it... The game is so wonderful, how can it ruin relationships? Why not use it to build them? It's such an amazing thing the couple can do together :)..

Sounds good to me! Do you have a boyfriend? ))

Are you serious?  You don't realize that some people don't wanna play?  Or that some people wanna play so much that it makes their partner feel frustrated that they can't get them to partake in any other bonding activity?  Hmm.

This is a great topic. I am totally addicted to chess. Here's why. I used to play when I was much younger and lost touch with the game after I became a musician. I got back into it years later because I was was at a point in my life where I needed a a foothold on sanity (I was going through cancer treatment and needed something to take me away from the brutal treatment). Chess is a place I can go to when I need to get lost from the pressures of life. It's like a drug to me. I love the game on so many levels, especially the learning process. Learning the game is an on going thing and I don't mind the losses I suffer because I can learn from them. Fridays and the day i lounge in bed and play chess all day. It's great, I shut the world out and play chess. I love the challange and the reward for lessons learned well. I am a chess bum and a chess junkie. I put off my PhD program for another year because I'd rather improve my game. Hell, I schedule shows with my band around chess. I'm into the game hook, line and sinker. I hav a serious hess addiction.

Hey Hugh, just like you, I played alot as a kid and then stopped playing for many years......one day I just felt compelled to start playing again, bought myself a really nice board and pieces ( the fischer -spassky Rejvak 11 set from house of staunton ) and then found Chess.com . I don't know why I stopped playing for so many years but am sooo glad I started again, it really is the greatest game ever invented. I don't know much about the history of Chess but whoever came up withthis game is truly a genius !! No other game is as timeless, complicated, challenging or addictive. BTW I was in San Fran last week for a menu sampling trip ( I'm a Chef) and it really is a great city ! Ate at Gary danko, Coi, Quince etc. ....awesome stuff :)

The same here. Started around 14 then entered university and put it away for 25 years. Then Internet came and I started to play online and really got hooked. Now I am also returning to play OTB. I´ve just discovered a street chess community near home and on August 22nd I am scheduled to play a rapid tournament.

Its hilarious that im reading some of the posts saying their addicted.. but 2 years later.. they stopped playing!

I know people burn out or saturate themselves with it, I do with other things in my life. But my chess candle won't burn out, not anymore

irinette

I have been addicted for more than a year already!

chesse_chames

you're only addicted if you accept that it is bad for you, and you can't stop playing.

Knightvanguard

Help, I'm playing and I can't stop!

Wow, this is a very interesting topic. I was just thinking the same thing because I have played over a thousand games on chess.com. I have been a member for a little over a year now, and I have averaged about three games a day. Like another post I saw, I also lost touch with the game for years, and as a result my game got rusty. I lose alot, but I win alot too. I learn as I go, and YES, I am a true chess addict. I truly enjoy the game, and no two games are ever the same. I have met some real competition online, but I keep my head up and keep playing. My wife and six year old daughter KNOW that I am addicted to chess. My daugher always asks me "daddy, you playing chess?" whenever she sees me pull out my laptop. So if there is such a place as a "chess rehab" I can be a good candidate for admission.

Hehe, since I stumbled upon this site I seem to get this question also.
My answer: i learned her the rules and now we both can play :D

She say's she HATES chess.com because I always sound so distracted when i'm playing a game. I had to laugh out loud when i read your post because I could have written it, word for word, it's so similar to my situation. You (and she) have my sympathy.

My wife calls home, I answer, sound distracted, I'm playing live Chess, she asks " are you playing Chess?" I lie , instantly feeling guilty, tell her I'm doing ANYTHING but playing chess ! LOL.....it's already a sore spot between us, should I feel guilty for playing chess ? Everytme I get near a computer I feel I have to check my games ! Am I the olny one ?

Sometimes, our loved ones have every right to treat chess.com as a homewrecker.Embarassed

Update on my post. My wife is gone but I am still with Chess.com . The nice part about that is I no longer feel guilty when playng chess.

When you start asking yourself this question, it's already too late

Elubas

I don't think there is much wrong with playing lots of chess -- as long as you are paid to do it.

Elubas

Replace everyday tasks with chess for a couple years, get out there, get a 2700 rating, clean yourself up a bit -- you might get a few followers.
