Am I addicted to Chess?

Thank God I'm not a chess addict! There are better things to be addicted to, age doesn't matter.

I am kinda addicted to chess. It's what I do instead of having a life, lol. But I love it more than anything else, and I'm decent enough at it that it's very fun. I remember when I was U1000 I was very frustrated because I was getting my butt kicked a lot, and I often wanted to quit but kept coming back.

Hi , had a quick look at your stats, and i concur, you are an addict !! At least your rating is on an upward trend, mine is dropping like the stock market, I think I have been playing too much garbage blitz chess. I dont know how to get better at this game. I think maybe people are pre determined at birth as to their Chess rating, any thoughts ?

I have been playing a lot of OTB U.S.C.F. chess in the last two years. I took a year off chess as a freshman in HS and came back with a rating of 962 and I have recently broken 1800. It's not that people are predetermined at birth, but that if you don't get a jumpstart on it as a kid, it's much harder to improve later in life. A lot of the older men at the chess clubs I go to used to be much better than they are today. The most important thing about improving is to keep playing chess (you do kinda have to be an addict. I mean playing OTB tournaments a majority of weekends and analyzing your games to death, as well as practicing online a lot). Secondarily, make sure your OTB games are mainly against higher-rated opponents. Playing up is the best way to gain good experience.

I am addicted to both chess and online blitz, as they are two different things IMO. I am very awful at blitz, as my online blitz rating is beneath my U.S.C.F. floor. It can help try out openings but mostly it's not useful. I still can't stop playing it though, as I've played around 70 blitz games on this site just in the past two days (and now I have exactly 3000 blitz games, lol). Tactics practice is useful, though.

So you are suggesting that because I posed the question, that makes me addicted ? So what if I asked the question "am I a Grandmaster?"...

TheOldReb

You know you arent a grandmaster , so you don't ask . People who ask if they are addicted to something generally are .  If they know they arent addicted to something they wouldn't ask others if they think they are . I have been addicted to chess for decades and I can spot fellow addicts rather easily .  Have you asked your wife what she thinks ?  Fortunately for me my wife is also a chess addict so chess isnt a problem for us . Wink

I founded a Chessaholics Anonymous group to provide support for people like us. At the meeting, we played chess...

Chess is a cruel mistress !

This is true Rex, however she can also be very rewarding. You have to take the good with the bad. She is also mysterious, elusive, moody, alluring and sometimes plays hard to get.

Chess is a lifestyle

ZimbabweanMakeYouCry

Let's be honest guys, it may be stimulating but it certainley isn't productive. I am an adict too unfortunately. Chess is more than a sore spot with my wife. She aboslutely hates it. She gave away all my chess sets and books, I've even deleted and unistalled all chess books and software, but you can't delete chess.com. At work, the afternoon belongs to chess. At home, my free time belongs to chess. I just find myself playing. Been trying to stop for years now. I've tried counselling, ut this not being a drug is much more difficult to stop I think. Right now even, I woke up to study but have been playing chess for the past 2 hours. I've put of courses because of chess. I seriously need hed help, or is it just self control?
