It is a handicap for Carlsen if Anand Will put presure with both colors
Anand vs. Carlsen Game 1 results.
Carlsen's game strategy is usually to get into a playable middlegame and win from there.
Today, he didn't push for anything because he wanted a draw as white to get the first-game jitters out of the way. Remember Spassky-Fischer's game one?
Fischer had more games to play with. In this shortened format had Fischer gone 0-2 it would not have been good.
I think if Anand wins the next game, we could be looking at a quick end to this match. First off, even though he won the Candidates, Carlsen did not win it like a world champion. He played great chess for most of the tournament, but he's supposed to do that. He's a great chess player. He lost his last game and backed into the win. That's not the way a player that's ready to win it all is supposed to win. You are supposed to grab and take that title. I think he was weakened and nervous at the end of that tournament. Well, the pressure just got ramped up twice as high. The stakes are higher, the expectations are enormous, the hype is incredible, he's not home etc... Now he's played poorly in the first game of the championship. So the pressure just got ramped up higher still. If Anand wins the next one, I think the pressure is going to overwhelm the kid against such a seasoned champiom.

But Anand hasn't won a tournament like a World Champion in almost six years...

No one has beaten him yet either.

It was Carlsen's Candidates you mentioned as not World Champion level, but the last time Anand won a tournament ahead of Kramnik and Aronian was more than six years ago. So the comparison halts a bit if it's supposed to show that Carlsen hasn't been World Champion level.
In the game itself, the Indian public for the first time saw the endless stamina, and unmatched fighting spirit of Magnus Carlsen that everybody was talking about........ GM Parimarjan Negi
Anand: I am comfortable with the draw. It is my plan to get a draw as I played Black. I would try to play for a draw in 2nd game. A shorter one, half the moves of 1st game: 8 moves.
Carlsen: It's boring to play Anand. I will draw if Anand wanted it. The 2nd game, I hope, is half the length of the 1st: 8 moves. I am going for a draw in the 2nd game. I am going to play Black, uh, draw is satisfying.
So here is the second game:
1. d4 d5. 2. Kd2 Kd7 3. Kd1 Kd8 4. Kd2 Kd7 5. Kd1 Kd8 6. Kd2 Kd7 7. Kd1 Kd8 8. Kd2 Kd7 ----> Draw by agreement.
Well, 3rd game:
1. e4 e5 ----> Shake hand, Draw.
4th game : postponed.
An awful lot of speculation based on a single drawn game.
+1.
Carlsen got himself into a bad position and was glad to come out of it with an easy draw. Anand was glad to settle for the draw as black. Doesn't tell us much.
Come to think of it, winning a Candidates tournament and being World Champion level has always turned out to be more or less synonyms. Previous winners of Candidates tournaments were: Bronstein (1950) - drew the title match, Smyslov (1953) - drew the title match, Smyslov (1956) - won the title match, Tal (1959) - won the title match, Petrosian (1962) - won the title match, and then Leko (2002 in a tournament/match mix) - drew the title match. So if Carlsen would lose he will be the first winner of a Candidates tournament to lose the title match.
I prefer to think about my Christmas gift for Anand.
Not sure which frame i will use for his picture. It will be such a nice picture and sure he will enjoy it. Yes it will be the photo of him after the game. The one that shows how frustrated he was when he lost.
The title of my photo will be either "Aging Anand" or "Hit the road Jack" aka "End of Anand Era".
Carlsen tried to play cute, but it backfired. Then, he settled for a draw. Looking at body language, Carlsen looked fidgety whereas Anand just stared at the board.
Still early, but Carlsen not showing his domination so far.
So much for no agreed draws under 30 moves. If the players are timid, they can draw at will.
Not an advertisement for chess this one.

The point was to suggest that Carlsen is not mentally ready to take the championship away from someone as good and experienced as Anand.
Yeah they said the same thing about Eli Manning vs The Patriots and their perfect record.
Down with Anand. His time has come! Men, Women and Children will here of a new champion. The Champion of the future not the tales of aging players. Let the old man stand to the side of the road and make way for the young Golden Guy! Carlsen is Champion!
Doesn't say much for humans. If a computer studies the board it will think- 'what is the best move,' if a human studies the board it will say 'will my pride let me lose.'
Disappointed? Not me, if anything I might blame the match format.
You want them to risk a loss in game 1 of such a short match?
Match format is not to blame. Carlsen's strategy is to blame.
The matches have been 12 games for the last 6 championships (since 2000). Never has there been such a short draw.
Actually there were shorter draws. Just remember Braingames, or Kramnik-Leko... Even shorter!
Let's take a look at some recent statistics of WCC:
YEAR (TG (PG) - TW)
TG - Total games, PG - played games, TW - Total wins
1972 (24 (21) - 10)
1990 (24 - 7)
1995 (24 (20) - 5)
2000 (16 (15) - 2)
2004 (14 - 3)
2006 (12 + playoffs - 6+3)
2008 (12 (11) - 4)
2012 (12 + playoffs - 2+1)
So, it depends on players, but of course also on match format

Carlsen has a good strategy. Play badly in game one so that Anand relaxes and gets hit by a barrage of Carlsen punches in the next few games. Vishy will be vishing on a star soon.
I did not know that. I'm gonna be patronizing the game to see that.
