Dear All,

While reading annotated chess books, I am facing problems working out the alternate moves provided on a real board. Is there a facility available on chess.com where one can work out the alternatives as provided in the annotated played games in the database ? Does such alternatives exist inbuilt in the database games ? If no, then what do you suggest as solution ?

It's mostly a matter of practice. While there are mistakes in many books, the usual problem is that you make a mistake and then don't notice it until many moves later.

What books are you reading? Are they in descriptive or algebraic notation?

Some popular older books, like "My System", have their games available online but most will not show the variations you are reviewing.

Its not about the moves in the book. what I meant was how to play them out on board when we are already playing the annotated game and alternate moves provided in brackets can disrupt the original game . So is there any way to play it online or any other solutions ?

Most GUIs can handle variations with ease. Arena, Scid, Scid vs. PC, etc., and most commercial GUIs.

Use your visualization skills for the variations.

It's simple, you have three options:

1) Get out 2 boards, one for main moves, then use the other for alternatives.

2) Replay the moves rapidly until you get to the point you were at.  This actually works in some ways in that it re-inforces the moves and how you got to where you are.

3) Go to the latest diagram position and replay the moves from there.  For example, if you are looking at alternatives to Black's 14th move, and the latest diagram is after White's 12th, reset the diagram position and replay thru Black's 12th thru White's 14th moves.

There is an app which you can get for IPhone, IPad or for Andoid phones called Chess Pro with Coach. It allows you to play a game as both sides so you can input games into it from books and it allows variations, although it is easy just to scroll backwards. Setting up positions is really easy too and the computer will score the position and give alternative moves so you can check whether the analysis is correct (it isn't always in older books). Plus it has tons of games in it's database so it's a useful program.

If you are using tablet or smart phone, you can download free droidfish. Chess study lite is even better as you can replay the moves while reading a PDF for verbal annotations.
