any advice on mating with pieces besides queen and rook

Checkmate patters manual might help you out, or 100 endgames you must know. If your trying to mate with knight + bishop vs king then i wouldnt get to worked up iv come close to punching the computer a few times with that one.
It is something you must know. Just practice until you get it. Even if you encounter it only a few times in your lifetime, it will teach you how to coordinate pieces, which is useful in many endgames.

Can you give an example game?
Typically the procedure is to use your extra material to win pawn(s) and then use your extra pawns to make a new queen.

But to answer your question, one exercise that's useful is to look at all of these:

And then without looking at them try to set up as many as you can (use an empty board and put pieces wherever you want).
If you only remember a few that's fine. Just do this now and then until you can set up most of them... because after the patterns sink into your brain, you'll start noticing more possibilities in your games.
