Guess not.
Any regimented chess study programs?
Thanks SerbianChessStar, I just looked that up and it does exist. Problem is it is currently closed as it does "restructuring" and says it will likely be open early 2012, so that project may be dead in the water.
It also wouldn't have to be a "school" just something that is essentially "Today we are focusing on this topic" and then has lessons on it and continues on to the next lesson in a well thought out structure that improves a player's skills.
With all due respect, it seems to me that you aren't taking advantage of the resources on this site. Adnittedly both the Chess Mentor and the Tactics Trainer here are uneven in their quality, but you have barely used either one. The modern view seems to be that tactics are by far the quickest way to improve your skill, so unless you're training tactics offsite, that would seem the logical place to start. Chess Mentor has some great courses that you can study and then review over and over again; you know, kind of like a good book, but with someone else setting up the board and moving the pieces for you. Just my 2cents, your mileage may vary......

I appreciate the thought, but that isn't what I'm looking for. And compared to other tactics trainers out there I highly dislike this one. It is very detrimental to people learning and improving to penalize them so hefty for taking 45 seconds to make sure they've found the best tactic and provide the incorrect reward by giving them negative points for getting it correct. At the master level finding the same tactics faster is obviously an improvement with time management. At below 1500 just finding the right move should be the focus and not the time it takes.
I find chesstempo to be a far better tactics trainer. It also doesn't penalize for finding a different strong move that isn't the absolute strongest.
Chess Mentor is fine, but like the study plan on this site it feels haphazard because it isn't constructed in a beginner to expert format. It is people randomly picking the topics they want to make courses on and randomly sticking them all together.
I am enrolled in ICS Chess Master School.
It's very regimented/structured and quite legit. You seem skeptical about it, so I would heartily recommend it. I enrolled in the core course in May.
I like it.

I like it.
I would be interested to hear how you like it in a couple of more months to see if it continues on as a good training program.
It seems fishy to me because typically when a company goes out of its way to do search engineering, making it so anyone looking for outside reviews/opinions can only find reviews on the official site, that they have something to hide.
Have you seen any improvement in your live chess?
I play alot of online/turn based and have seen a big improvement there went from @1400 to 1680. I'd like to bust 1800 by years end. In my live standard games I have seen improvement my goal is to bust 1600 in live standard by years end. I've gone from 1200 to 1343 I think.
When I play blitz or lightning I can't take it seriously, I'm too old for my brain to work well at that speed...
Re the course..
The first month is positional and "how to think"
Second month King Safety and attacking the King/castled and weak square complex. Types of pawn centers and the goals and plans for each type of center And Board visualization and tactical study.
I can say it is a great course and would recommend it if you are looking for structured learning. I would be happy to update you if you contact me at a later date.
I found this article years ago http://chessok.com/?p=21207
its easy to modify using other materials but its what is used at the petrosian school.

The ICS website describes the Core Course as being suitable for students of amateur rank and above, which is basically 1400 and up, right? Do you think that course would be suitable for someone with no rank at all, who understands the fundamentals of tactics and strategy, but who just isn't very good at their application OTB?

Are there any regimented chess study programs online? I know there is the chess master school, but given how they've done a lot of work to make sure if you search chess master school review you get 6 page results that all go back to their site that is already fishy enough for me.
There is the study program on here. It has links to good info but overall it feels kind of haphazard.
Or is it still old school with books being the only good source out there?
There are coaches of course but that is an extremely expensive approach.
