Appropriate Opening for Chess Skill

I am finding that playing 1.c5 is having good results at my present skill level, but years ago when I was much worse I had terrible results.
I think it has to do with understanding ideas and ability to deal with more complicated positions, which includes better board vision.
Any thoughts on playing chess openings appropriate for skill level?
