Are chess players considered boring?

When I say I play chess I sometimes think it's a total turn off for the opposite sex (I'm a guy). I get the feeling that people tend to think of chess players as boring, am I right? 😁

That's funny: I've had the exact opposite experience.  PreCorona, when I'd go to the local watering hole, I'd usually take a small tablet and boot up a tactics trainer.  Before long I'd have chicks almost fighting among themselves to see who would get to take me home for a "game".  Let's face it, chess is an aphrodisiac...

haha baddgono, I'm sensing some sarcasm there, very funny 😁. Yes I find that having an interest in chess doesn't exactly get the ladies weak at the knees 😁

Find a female chess player.

Yes, from everything I know from my own experience, from what friends who play said, and from the way people react when chess is mentioned. It is definitely boring to people who don’t play, which includes women.

There is no need to pretend like how some people do that chess is such a fun thing. Don’t try talking about it to people if they are not interested. They’ll be understandably turned off by this.

If anyone has a choice between a romantic relationship and chess, the choice should be obvious. You pick romantic relationships. Way more benefit to life from time or money spent.

Chess is better than romantic relationships.

Does anyone here have a choice.

I consider myself a very attractive female. I love when the players stroke the queen as they move her the way they want wink.png

Haha what has become of this thread?

boringness is in the eye of the beholder

In my experience, lots of people associate chess with intelligence - even, if not especially, from those who know nothing about how to play. I think chess can be kind of attractive in this light, but the problem is when chess players use cheesy pick-up lines and jokes related to chess. Chess is JUST a board game (anyone who thinks it is a sport can fight me; it is a game. That's right, the riot is starting  ) and consequentially, it is not attractive to people when you focus what seems to be all of your energy for this game. Ironically, showing passion for things like chess can deepen your personality and character. Confused yet?

Basically, I think the problem isn't with chess itself, but rather with how you present chess and with how much interest you show for it. For example: "chess is life!" probably not too attractive unless they also love chess this way. "I really enjoy chess a lot as a hobby" [and are unapologetic about sharing this feeling] very cool.

I think chess players are just a sad lonely desperate bunch seeking external validation from the world. If you go about life needing someone to love you then you'll always be unhappy.

a bit overgeneralizing don't ya think?

No! Chess players are certainly not boring! Find yourself a chess friend.

I travel a great deal and play chess and read books when I fly. So, that makes me doubly boring I suppose. I've had a few people show interest in chess but very few are excited to see me holding a bookhappy.png

I don't consider it boring and even if I thought other people did I wouldn't care. It would be a complete waste of my life to only do things other people found exciting. Some famous amateur players include Howard Stern, John Wayne, Stanley Kubrick, Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen Fry, Charlie Chaplin and Humphrey Bogart, none of whom I would consider to be boring.
