Yes.  After reading that excellent article that you linked to, the answer is undoubtedly yes.  At least at the elite GM level.  Thanks for providing the article!

Is Mikhail Tal still around? He was a very imaginative combination player. Loved his games!

And died from liver damage.

At least he avoided lung cancer!

When I was a keen tournament player I made sure I was fit and never drank a lot of coffee early in the day. I also smoked Havana cigars to concentrate the mind and put the opponent off.

Liver...Lung...take your pick.

Yeah, I was just reading his Wikipedia entry. It doesn't seem very clear what exactly did him in.

"On 28 June 1992, Tal died in a Moscow hospital, officially of a haemorrhage in the esophagus. But his friend and fellow Soviet grandmaster Genna Sosonko reported that "in reality, all his organs had stopped functioning."

Seems tal never played the fried liver attack.

Yeah. Diet and exercise are very important. Paying close attention to both seems to help today's top grandmasters as chess tournaments and matches are a high stress activity. surprise.png
