Are you actively trying to improve your chess and don't go to a chess club?

If that is so, then I guess that you are not playing as much OTB as you'd like. Am I right?

When I went to my one and only local chess club, all I found were two really old men who were, I suppose coaches, that wouldn't play with me as they didn't know me, and I didn't want to pay them; and some kids that had ratings about twice mine and actually laughed in my face when I presented myself.

That's a shame. There is a pecking order in a chess club. It's just the way it is. Never the less, you have to soldier on - most chess players are fine once you get to know them.

Thats awful and they should all be ashamed .  My first club experience was a nice one except that I lost every game !  Everyone there seemed eager to play me my first visit , probably because they wanted to beat the " new guy " and they did . All of them were nice though and none of them gloated or anything like that and several were even helpful and encouraged me . I kept going , joined the club where I was a member for a decade or more and I became the strongest player in the club so eventually got my revenge .  Surprised

Ah..the good old old old days...Laughing

Unfortunatley, I've heard more storeis like Gnrffrtzl's I will finally get to play at a club later this year when I rethrn to American. I hope my experience is more like yours. Because I am not very tolerant to jerks.

There was only one jerk in our club but over the years he and I eventually learned to get along ... I think every club has at least one or two jerks and the rest arent , don't let them run you off ....

Avatar of adumbrate

Our club is nice :) Except for the first time when they said that their average rating would go down XD. Now I'm top 5

Avatar of Pulpofeira

Wow, so it really went down then!

Never had anyone at a chess club laugh in my face.  One look at me and they know they're dealing with someone who isn't afraid to punch them in their face if they get uppity.

The club I attend is very informal with meetings on Tuesday enenings and Saturday mornings. The Tuesday meeting are usually only about 7-10 menbers and Saturdays 15 to 20. The group that meets on Tuesday is usually the older folks with Saturdays having the youngsters and olders. We have tournaments, private instruction, and some really good players. Everyone has fun and no one talks smack or insults anyone. All in all it has been a very good experience.
