There is a question about chess: is it an art or a science. I am about as talented in both. That is to say about average in both halves of my brain. I think Grandmasters have made it an art form. Any opinions?

There is an element of art to most games and sciences.  I was Chief Chemist of Process Research for a subsidiary of Dow Chemical and when we developed new ways to make chemicals there was always an element of art, especially symmetry, that guided us.

In chess, recognizing patterns is very important and there's certainly art there: for example, even the names of the Dovetail Mate and the Swallow's Tail Mate remind you they are similar to each other (one based on a diagonal, the other on rank or file).  Think about how you look for tactics: the cases where you recognize shapes help you make decisions faster than grinding out the math of move-by-move.

It's just a game until somebody loses an eye.

... then it's a sport.

Chess is more science than art because given finite time, you (or computer) can find the best solution.  Given finite time, I doubt you (or computer) can re-create Beat It !
