FedeiDefensor & Irontiger, if you feel a member should be reported (such as the racist jonesmurphy) consider doing it yourselves also because the more members that report the same person the more likely chess.com is to do something.

That's why some of us wonder if it will be financially viable.

Low turnout is good for the players, bad for the organizers.  High turnout is good for the organizers, not as good for the players.

It's why you can't have payout values until you know how many entrants you have. Doesn't make sense.

On the other hand, you can't expect people to part with a thousand bucks, unless you do make some guarantees. The organiser is in a tough spot, of his own making.

Most big poker tournaments don't tell you how much you're going to win. People still enter. You can still guarantee a total fund, breakdowns should be percentage based though IMO.

Doesn't really make sense to me that the prize is the same if 10 or 10,000 people enter.

The big poker tournaments have high expectation of big interest. They've been at it for a while, and have established clientele, who won't bat an eyelid at the large buy in.

Chess tournament with a large entry fee? that's a leap in the dark. Organiser obviously feels he needs to prime the pump.

I think that there are better ways of ways of losing ones money in Las Vegas.

Grandmaster Saul stakes his hard earned chess money playing Texas Hold
Em at Caesars Palace.

It's seems to be set up to maximise risk/reward. Yeah it's not a complete parallel, but set prizes from unknown buy ins seems a little strange.

It's typical for the organizers of large tournaments to offer a guaranteed pirze fund, but the others have past experience to help them set the amount.

Fair enough. But here they were 1400 out on the early signup estimate. And small mistakes in forecasting have bigger effects with bigger payouts.

Also, just because it's common doesn't mean it's good.

Most established tournaments in the UK, post a minimum guaranteed prize fund, which increases after a certain financial tipping point has been reached (i.e. more entry fees = bigger prizes).

If I could find "Tournament will be cancelled", at evens, I'd probably take a piece of that. I can't imagine that there's sufficiently many chess players, with $1000 to spare on their hobby. I think the most I ever paid to play was £36, maybe that colours my judgement.

They've missed several things.  In Amy Lee's blog, she notes that there are 40,000 adult USCF members.  This is true, but what she missed is that only 13,000 of the adult members are active (have played in at least one tournament in the last 12 months).  Her market is about 1/3 the number that she was using for her estimate.

As for the 1500 entrants by March 31, I don't know what to think of that.  They have the right to cancel the tournament at any time.  They will just have to absorb the fixed costs.

The tournament will never happen. That was not the question, or the issue. The issue is that it was attempted in the first place.

If Amy Lee wants to spend her idle millions helping chess, there are many better ways to do this than create some elite tournament designed to fleece morons. I'm sure she knows this, and since she went with the million dollar proposal anyway, her own values are evident - and they don't center around chess.

Oh, and vizio drawing....don't forget your clock :)

After reading all the comments this morning laying in bed with my wife. We was lauging at some of the comment. One player said" bringing a clock to the tournament is like asking him to bring a knife and fork to a resturant." A plumer will always have his tools, and a chess player need to always have his tools.I have a blitz clock for playing around town at Starbucks, and a tournament clock. The topic did go south when you guys start attacking Maurice Ashley. My wife couldn't not believe a brilliant chess player would make so many negative statements about another chess player. Remember! everyone can read these comment, so try to act like a wise guy. The guy Maskedbishop is brilliant! He played us all using reverse psycology. Chess players! you did all the math on other tournament. Men lie, women lie, but numbers never lie. After doing all the math, the MC tournament is a no brainer. Maskedbishop already know this chess players. I will bet he has already signed up and ready to win  from a low turnout. Ask yourself chess player what do he gain from all his negative comments? Right! a spot in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place all good payouts at the MC tournament. I will bet that he is a High rated player. Why! he said " Chess players can use that money for a coach." What are you paying for rating points? Only a tiny fraction of the people who play chess become masters. In fact only 2 percent who take chess seriousely make master.I read this in the book" what it takes to become a Chess Master by Andrew Soltis". In my opinion one should pay for his credit score he will be in a better posistion in life. I love the game, I start playing a few years ago, I am 50 years old, and I realize I will not reach master level. I just enjoying the game. Please chess players enjoy the game.  I don't care if your rating point are higher than my score, if I am making key chess move in life. I can live with be a average 1500 chess player 1. Every one with a rating higher than your score, thinks his has the right to charge 25.00 hour. Now! that is a sucker move in my humble opinion. Please tell all the un1600 player I will be in Vegas, so bring your A game. Remember! we having fun, its a game.

You realise that the restaurant and plumber are providing a service, do provide the equipment. The chess player is paying for a service not providing one. I guess it depends in expectations.

It would be cool if Carlsen entered.  It'd pretty much be a lock for him given how he's Capablanca on steroids able to prep with a top notch computer.

Avatar of maskedbishop

Oh I'm so busted. Mea Culpa, I'm in...please, all of you, enter now! I'm looking forward to spending your money.

See you in the VIP room (remember, YOU only get in once)...I'll be the guy in the massage chair, eating the free chocolates and listening to the "musical soundtrack," while I consider changing my superhero name to "Chumpfleecer."

Not as much as I will enjoy spending your $1000 that you paid to let me thump you in Vegas. See you in the funny papers :)

At present, I can enter my section and be *guaranteed* to win at least $1000. If few people sign up, I might just register for this event. Laughing
