At what age chess should be taught

i would say dont teach him chess at this age i mean let him play sport better so he can grow healthy at 12 if he find interest in chess teach him but he still need to play sport

yes to develop interest in chess it can be taught in early age but physical health is equally important

I mean can we teach chess to 4 year old

It can begin as early as 4 or 5 with more seriousness as the child grows.

Henrik tried to get Carlsen interested in chess when he was as little as 5 but he appeared to be uninterested at that time. When turned 6 however, he did start to play occasionally though he wasn't very interested still, so we can assume by this point he wasn't a complete noob since he had over a years times worth of 'casual' knowledge of the game.
He started to get more serious by the time he got to 7, mainly from the influence of his father (and his older sister to some extent).
He started the grind at age 8 and spent hours on the board. He also pretty much read all of his father's chess books. He beat his sister for the first time around about this age.
He beat his dad for the first time when he was 9.
He started attending Junior and Adult chess tournaments when he was only 10.

It should be taught when your kid keeps on asking you to teach him/her. Use it (learning and playing chess time) as an incentive... like eat this small tree (broccoli) and we'll play chess.

My coach has been teaching his son chess since around 2 and he already knows how to move the pieces and do some standard tactics at age 4 about.

Immediately after birth. You may have to insist to the doctors in order to bring the chessboard in the hospital room.

If you are talented like Carlsen even 7 is not too late. I recommend starting between 2-3.
100% agree 2-3 years of old is a perfect age to start

If you have talent chess clicks in the first year. My dad taught me at 10 in June 1971. As such I had some grasp a year later.

Yes! In that age, they will be interested. My brother, @imjustnovice , started chess at the age of 5, but still has a long way to go.

I learned to play chess on my own at the age of 8 years old. But I didn't play in my first USCF-rated chess tourney until I turned 9.
Personally, I think the best time for a child to learn about chess (assuming the child is interested) is while the child is still in grade school. If the child has ambitions on becoming a master-level player, then the child should learn to play at some point during grade school and play in their first rated tourney before completing grade school. According to a small sample of master-level players (N=~200) I compiled info on in my spare time, it seems that the players who played in their first USCF-rated tourney between the ages of 6 and 11 tend to progress from 0 to Master at a quicker pace [N=125] (median= ~6.7-6.8 yrs) than those who learned before the age of 6 [N=11] (median = 8 years) or during adolescence [N=30] (median = ~9.8 years).
