Rules of the game? Back when I was a eety beety kiddie. Play chess seriously? A few weeks ago at the age of 14. I can beat anyone at my school (unless there's a chess genuis hidden there or something, or I epicly blunder) with relative ease, even those 3 years older than me at my school's chess club. (although age =/= chess ability)

I learned when i was 8 but due to the fact that i was not able to use the computer then and anytime i got a set i lost the pieces i quickly lost intrest (within 2 months) but at the beginning of this summer (when i was 13) i read a book called "The Queens Gambit" by Walter Tevis and quickly picked up interest again

We Arabs are born knowing how to play chess (doesn't mean I'm any good lol).

Kidding aside, I don't remember learning, but my sisters shares her memory of it with me so I guess I was 4 or 5 or 6 ... somewhere around there.  But I've just always known how the pieces move even if it wasn't a game we played a lot.  I learned pawns can move two spaces on their first move and to castle kingside in high school, I learned to castle queenside properly and en passant about 6 months ago after joining chess.com.

I learned chess at maybe 8 years old because I was bored of playing checkers.  I played with my younger brother, but we didn't really get the rules from the instructions that came with the set.  This spring, I started playing against my friends because we had nothing better, and that was when I started really getting into it and learning how to play correctly.  I just turned 14, and now I play chess with my friends all lunch...

I was only introduced to Chess  in High School, and even represented my school in a few tournaments...then I put my studies and career above everything else. I had not even seen a chess set for a period of about 25 years, because no one closely associated with me played the game, then I met chess.com in Dec 2009. This is when I really got hooked, and really began for the first time being a student of the game. Bought my very first chess set this year- 2010, and my first chess book was purchased last year-2009.

I don't have an engine yet, but I am considering buying one, especially to assist in the end games of GMs. I follow only world tournaments now, and enjoy every moment of them. I met Anand in India a few years ago, and got his autograph. My next mission is to meet my chess hero Garry Kasparov (he was fighting for the world title against Karpov when I was at High School).

I think it's neat to hear the ages we started at and who taught us the game.

When I was about 7, I learned how the pieces moved by reading the inside of the box lid from one of those cheap chess/checkers sets from Kmart (Wal-Mart didn't exist back then).

When I was about 27, the friendly folks at a chess club in Baytown, TX showed me (quite decisively) that there was a very big difference between knowing how the pieces moved and knowing how to play. Uphill battle ever since.
