Auto-Queen on or off?

I discovered the auto-queen function this morning from settings. I was wondering if you have experience using it? If it's helpful or not. I'm guessing at least in bullet it saves valuable seconds. But then there's the rare opportunity that under promotion would be better.

I agree

There is always the mystical underpromotion. If you play bullet with increment, turn it off.

But it rare 🤞🏼

Hmmm I am guessing it takes that special moment of having auto queen on and loosing a game because of it to turn it off. I keep imagining that moment of being able to fork the queen and king if only able to turn into a knight, if the auto queen was turned off... but then it wasn't...It's bound to happen someday! But what is the probability of that happening?

I am guessing that in comparison having it on wins a lot more games with saved time. But it is kinda lame to have it on in for example rapid. So just gotta remember to turn it off for the slower modes.

Sometimes the hesitation to promote takes an extra second because being aware that the promotion will cost extra time. So having auto queen on has it perks if it kills the hesitation seconds also and just running to the finish line to promote!

It saves half a second. Or maybe a full second. Maybe in bullet it's not terrible, but otherwise it's ridiculous.

Yeah depends on the person how much time it saves. I agree it would be really embarrassing to loose in rapid using it. Not sure about blitz because some play it like it was bullet so time can become a factor in that too. It's a gray area if it would be good or bad in blitz. I have enjoyed the auto queen in action playing bullet today and it felt like a liberated queen moment. Won with time partly because of it!

Off. The queen is the first one so all you have to do is double click

Avatar of DareTower
Aaa I guess that saves time too if double clicking works... not as much as auto queen but still helpful! I now have more respect if anyone promotes to knight in bullet. I have yet to see it, but in theory.

I am guessing that in blitz one could rather use the quick double click (if it works well on mobile too). I personally start to fumble sometimes in promotions and loose extra time and concentration, but it's probably just me.

I think thats a bad idea. Sometimes underpromotion will really help. You could just premove the promotion to queen

Avatar of DareTower
Premoves are risky that far in the game, might be fatal. I use them in the beginning. And in panic ending trying to stay alive with time. I don't know if anybody has made any surveys about this if auto queen gives more wins than it takes wins, but I am guessing in bullet it gives more wins than having it off. The memes about it are funny yet about rare occasions. It comes down to pride I think. Any self respecting chess pro probably has it off. I don't yet have that much self respect in chess so I don't care... if it gives me an advantage - I'll take it!

I only premove a lot when I have 20 seconds haha

I once accidentally had premoves off and somehow won 3/3 games (luckily they were like 50-100 rating lower)

I auto queen because the scenarios where I need to queen and mate within 1 second happens more often that the scenarios where I need to underpromote to win

I have it off because I don't usually end up in time scrambles

I don't think that's useful for me , so it's off

Ah I'm a filthy flagger so can't relate
