Automatic Resignation??

I was blitzing in a 3+2 match and when it came to a critical moment, I decided to take a longer think (1 1/2 minutes). Then the game said my opponent won by resignation?!
Pretty sure you just ran afoul of the "you're not allowed to think for more than half the total time of the game on any one move" rule. It was instituted as a response to folks just walking away from games instead of resigning. Yes, it saves time, but it also penalizes those who just want a good long think. Obviously it has received a mixed reception here, but at least now you know...

Has it come to that? I can understand the frustration of people who have to wait like 30 min or something because someone abandoned a long game - but in 3 min blitz?
Yeah, that is what I have been thinking too, blastforme. In a 3 minute blitz game this is just ridiculous and unacceptable to be honest. Made me think about moving to lichess.
Btw I have written chess.com about this issue and they have not answered me till this day. Perhaps they think this is good customer support?

These ‘new’ rules, though implemented in the right spirit, are not suitable for smaller games.
Happened to me just now in a 5 minute blitz game. I‘ll delete chess.com immediatly and play from now on on lichess. Can barely stop myself from swearing and insulting the responsibles from chess.com.

If you look at the bottom of the screen there is usually a countdown timer note that shows when you will auto resign

That's only appeared recently and even then, it sometimes glitches and doesn't show up

There are gonna be some false positives there, but tbh it shouldn't take you that long to make one move... especially not during a speed game.
