tl;dr: Former Backgammon player is good at positional play but bad at tactics. How to improve?
My kids are fascinated by chess and so I started teaching them. My chess abilities are limited but should be sufficient for many months (years?) to come. As a strong backgammon player I would have preferred to teach them backgammon, but for now I have shifted my attention completely to improving at (and playing) chess.
The basic rules I have known since my childhood, I have regularly solved puzzles in newspapers but I have never been a good player. To improve I got my hands on some textbooks, i.e.
Silman - Complete Endgame Course
Silman - How to Reassess Your Chess
Nunn - Learning Chess Tactics
The endgame book I have put aside for the moment because I either get crushed before getting there or win the endgame easily against a weaker opponent.
The positional and strategic thinking in "Reassess" feels quite natural to me, even obvious. I believe that this is due to my backgammon background.
But it turns out that I have quite some difficulties to grasp tactics. I can solve most puzzles in Nunn's book but it takes me up to 20 minutes. In addition to that I solve tactics at ChessTempo, but my rating won't break the 1200 barrier. I solve many difficult puzzles (given enough time), gaining points, and then blunder at easy ones, losing many points.
Could some other backgammon players comment on this?
How should I continue to improve my tactics?
And, in the long term, how can i utilize my seemingly good understanding of positional play?
