Bare King v. Time Expiration

I am curious as an novice player (just made 800 woop! tongue.png) what the general consensus is about sportsmanship when it comes to your opponent being left with a bare king and forcing a draw because your time expires when you are at M2 or even M1?

I ask because I have had 2 games in the past 24h which have ended this way and it leaves a real sour taste in the mouth as I feel that if it were me in this position and i could see I had been beaten but my opponent was about to lose the win because of a couple of seconds, that i would immediately resign as a gesture of sportsmanship.

If you learn the basic queen or rook checkmates you can pretty much pre-move them, which stops that being so much of a problem

For example - I took my opp’s last pawn with 17 seconds left on the clock. The game lasted another 23 moves….

Why don't people just resign when they are clearly beat?!
Honestly, it is a great, fun challenging game to have gotten to that point, something went wrong you lost out and you just put your hand out and say "Good game" and move on.
People clinging on for a draw or whatever, to me anyway, is just...well sad really.

I don't find it sad. Are the rules of the game and we all abide by them. The time constrain is a factor to take into account before even you start a game. If your opponent used his extra time probably he would have played better and viceversa: if you have not had that much time to move probably you would not have outplayed him.

And in my case I am terrible at blitz and time constraints, but I accept that I have other time limits that suits me best.

@bagpipe10 if it really bothers you, you can always play a time increment like 15/10, where you get 10 seconds extra every move. These are rarely decided by timeout.

Hope that helps!

I think if you can't get checkmate before the time runs out you're not really winning,

Dude just made another post about this. Okay here's the deal. You can choose to resign in those positions. It's nice but it's a mistake. If you don't care about your rating that's cool. Some people would like to raise their rating or keep it from dropping so they get to use the rules and you can complain about it but it's just that. You complaining without any results and giving away free points because you haven't learned how to move fast enough. As has been stated many times, you can avoid this issue if you play longer games. When you choose to play a game, you agree to the time restrictions. It's not your opponents fault if you lose or draw on time. It's yours. Period.
