The Basman-Sale Variation of the Sicillian still gets results:
1.e4,C5 2. Nf3,e6 3.d4,Cxd4 4.Nxd4,Bc5!? I recall winning a game with this in a county board game against a 157 ECF/ 1856 rating, and Basman's use of this opening line had such an impact on I.M. Bill Harston that he gave up opening with 1 e4 against Basman, Yes with accurate opening play white can be guaranteed a advantage, but over the board against against 1500-1800 black stands every chance amongst the complications ahead, I have had a few nice results in online games in classical time controls!
The late IM Basman scored with many weird lines: 1 e4 g5, 1 d4 h6, 1 g4, 1 h3...

Just 5 Be3 is great for white, but they are playing chess, not theory.

I Met Mike Basman on 3 occasions I used to help run the chess for schools program along with a co teacher, we would go all over the country helping to run The Mike Basman Chess program, helping young people into chess Mike Basman was always there at the prize giving a lovely guy. His program helped produce some great young players! Sadly missed is Mike such a nice guy to have known and met.
