Sorry, but alcohol + doing ANYTHING competitively do not tend to mix well.
Works well for drinking games.

Actually, I think it's all in the mood of the moment. But I can't play a move after too much beer...turn off PC & forget it. Vodka...play on & on in ever-decreasing circles.
A bunch of us from lodge brew beer, drink the brew we've made before, BBQ and play chess. Do we play better sans the awesome stouts, ales and so forth....alone at home over the computer or an analysis board? That is a funny thought, or at least a funny idea of "better" :)
Haha, I can be playing chess, start drinking, and after my second, or third drink, I'll almost immediately drop about 500 points.
I just played 2 games of blitz while drinking wine. Lost 1 game and won 2. However, sober or not I suck a blitz.
Every person is different. I agree with a comment earlier about a limited amount of beer (or wine, liquor) suppressing one's nerves, but there is certainly a limit, as those in this thread have said.
That certain amount is a place where all of us that drink know. The trick is to not go past it.
Does Carlsen put anything in his fruit juice? I only say that because I can remember a time when an older woman put a splash of vodka in mine. Didn't affect my chess.
I enjoy a few beers with my chess as it takes down my stress level after a hard day of work. When I do blunder as I often do, It does not bother me as much if I were sober. To each there own. Cheers.
My play seems to not really be dependant on how much beer I've consumed. I have won completely blitzed at a blitz game (see what I did there?) and I have lost in epic fashion. In fact, I just finished a game, not good but I won, after feeling the affect of a nice high abv ipa.
one beer- that's okay. And one game. Try to play five in a row and I'm never up to my own standards.
case in point, won first game, spanked second game. Might have something to do with me switching to a coffee chocolate stout...
Low volume alcohol beers are great when you have a taste for one, but don't want to get buzzed.
Guiness is my fave. Here's a list, sort your favorites.

Ginger beer is fine.
