A good few years ago I got a shot glass chess set for my birthday. All the pieces were the aforementioned shot glasses, which you filled up with intoxicating liquor. The strongest stuff into the higher value pieces, and weaker stuff in the pawns.

It worked as a great leveller, as the more piece you capture, the harder it is to concentrate on the game :-)

beerman!  what a great thread.  Sierra Nevada, yea!  One brew you might look up on beeradvocate -- Kentucky Breakfast Stout, I've only had the pleasure one time but it was unforgettable. 

To the newcastle drinker -- hell yes! 

I try not to make my chess.com moves while drinking, but a neighbor and I get together for beers and chess about once a week, great time. 

A beautifull combination! It depends on what you drink of course. A sixpack of pilsner never brings out of concentration. But when we go to the heavy beers I prefer to play chess first and drink after the game.

And for the discussion whisky/whiskey vs. beer. Whisky is better than beer for those perhaps that never drunk good Belgian beers. For me they are equal, it depends on the mood I'm in. And then wine should also get involved.

I see there is a guiness in there.

Leffe is my beer of choice when it comes to chess. Hacker-Pschorr goes well too.

Also, BillyIdle, though the Woodlawn Tap is still in existence, I can't say that I've ever seen anyone playing chess in it. The Hyde Park chess scene seems to have moved to the Borders on 53rd street. I've seen a few locals breaking out boards in the Reynold's Club as well.

Shockingly, beerman... I LOVE to enjoy a brew with chess.  My chessplay is NOT excellent... but I can PRETEND that it's the beer's fault.  I do, however, have to agree with a previous poster... that drinking whilst playing ONLINE chess can be a bad combination... emailing ex girlfriends (or, in my case.... my ex-wife) could and would NOT be a... hmmmm, "good use of time".

Hurry up and make your move, beer man.... let's get you that L.
