Hi. I’m new to chess. Could anyone let me know the best way to learn and apply chess openings. Do I learn like 10 and then apply them as I go? Or should I master one and then go on to the second?

Also suggest me how to go around understanding and recognising patterns and chess tactics in middle game. Thanks.

"the best way to learn and apply chess openings" ++ Just play and analyse your lost games.

"Do I learn like 10 and then apply them as I go?" ++ Do not learn, just play.
What you learn does not happen and when itfinally happens you will have forgotten.

"Or should I master one and then go on to the second?"
++ Always play the same so as to accumulate experience.

"understanding and recognising patterns and chess tactics in middle game"
++ Comes from analysing your lost games.

I recommend you focus on playing the English as White and the French Defense vs e4 (king pawn) and the King’s Indian Defense against all other openings except the English. Versus the English, play the Caro-Kann (c4 c6). To learn use http://www.chesspractice.com to practice the openings over and over. There are sections titled ‘Learn to Play….’ That contain examples of all the above. And you can save games that you create. To further improve, after each game you play (rapid only), do Share, Copy and then go to http://www.chesspractice.com and analyze the game before playing another.
