What would be the best time control to play OTB=over the board in your opinion to get just enough skills, speed, percisnes etc.

What I mean is for example 1min which is bullet not blitz , but my point if you play it OTB it's just rubbish and you don't play a proper game of skills, percisnes etc.

So basically which time control do you squeeze the most out of the game , also test your opponent the most, most tactical, most skillful game etc...

3|0mins

3|2mins

5|0 mins

And elaborate your answers please.

I know some hustlers or people playing 3|0 because they don't want to play a long game and you can see someone's skills straight away either it's a real fight or they can't play , BUT at the same time if two opponents strong endgame become crazy fight dropping pieces etc... illegal moves etc...

3|2 on the other hand is good but it gives to much time to you opponent even if you outplay him very fast in the opening he still can gain time in the middle game by an increment which is kind of unfear and then both of you become equal again even tho you knew opening better and even middle game sometimes and moved faster but at the end time almost equal .

5|0 I think it's pretty good but to many people use to this time control, they can feel the time even not looking at it I mean it's to comfortable even for begginers.

5 0 is a lot of fun OTB, but unless it's a 5 0 tournament (or a blitz playoff) it's only played for fun. I'd say 10 0 balances pretty well between thinking quickly and having a semi high quality game. You have enough time to calculate during the critical positions but not so much time to find the right move in every position; so in many cases you're still playing off of intuition, basically. JMHO

Interesting thought here , as 10 mins also blitz

TalSpin

10 0 is definitely blitz but not so much by online standards. USCF QR used to be 10 2 online

I was a USCF Tournament Director and ran 5-round Swiss System tournaments, 30 min. per game with many trophies. Ties for the trophies were decided by 5-min blitz games.

The blitz games do virtually nothing to make you good a 30 min. games because you had no time to make plans. to look for weak squares and calculate how to exploit them, etc.  In the blitz games, you tried to make threatening moves while not hanging you pieces and not falling behind on time.  You used easy-to-execute tactics.

I would say you need at least 15/10 Rapid games to prepare for OTB games with 30 to 60 min. time controls.
