I wonder which country is best in chess? Which country has the strongest players in the world? Where does India stand compared to other countries?

It's Russia I think. I'm pretty it always has been.

If you count population size in proportion to number of masters and GMS it's Iceland that is the world leader.

No doubt that Russia is the best country for chess. The last I visited, chess was very popular, much like soccer is to Europeans. But then again, New York, NY has large concentrations of serious chess players as well. Tom Falater

All right, I'm moving to the US Virgin Islands.  I'd be in the top 3 there, and possibly could challenge for the #2 spot.

You could probably play some of the top U.S. Virgin Islands players right here on chess.com.  FM Jorge Massana FIDE 2178 doesn't seem to have an account, but John Dempsey 1952 goes by jd2417.  FM William Van Rensselaer 1918 is williamvanr.  Their third board at Tromso was Reece Creswell 1617 known here as noggers.

That's strange.  According to that link, the US Virgin Islands is ranked last with only two rated players, one at 1451 and one at 1204.  The only way I'm finishing in the top 3 anywhere is if there are only two other players.

Wow I had no idea that chess was so popular in Germany!

Dempsey, FM Van Rensselaer and Creswell have all been playing on chess.com, but perhaps there aren't that many FIDE rated tournaments in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
