Hey everyone. I've been playing chess since I was 15 but I didn't take it seriously till now (24 years old) and would like to improve my games. I normally play 15 or 30 mins games on chess.com though extreamly rare in clubs or events with other people. The reason I rarely play with people in events or clubs is because where I live we have only one chess club which is now closed (don't know why) I contacted them and they told me that they will open again on first of August. Right now I'm playing alone on chess.com versus other people online and not in person. I'd like to know what are the best ways to improve my rating and games ?

1- Chess tactics

2- Chess videos

3- Keep playing and practice with other people

4- Chess books

Any other ways ?

Oh and is there difference between playing person to person and online players ? I mean do you guys prefer to play against persons in clubs to improve chess games ?

The best way to improve your rating is to perform above your rating expectancy in rated events. The best way to improve your games is not uniquely determined by the information you have provided.

Apart from books you can play guess the move by turning off the notation pane after pulling up a database game, stop at certain points, and type your thoughts and calculations into a Word document.  Afterward check with a computer to see where you went wrong in your judgements and calculations. You can see what knowledge you truly assimilated as part of your thought process vs. stuff that you need to work on.

Do not care about your rating. The better you play the higher your rating will be. Try to focus on your game. The best thing you can do is participate in tournament and playing with real people. Then, after the game you should always analyse it with your oponnnent first to understand his thought process during the game and then alone, when you'll be checking what you could have done better. Through analysis you'll find the part of the game were you are weakest are. That's what you have to improve on. Don't care about memorising opening lines, just focus on general principles (develop your pieces, control the center, castle etc). Last but not least, play with players that are STRONGER than you. This is the only way to improve. So, say you have the chance of playing in two groups in a tournament, you should always prefer the stronger one.

These were some general advices. If you want anything more I'd be glad to help if I can. Have fun in the amazing world of chess. :)

This advice is coming from someone that is to lazy to set up a board to study, to lazy to analyze my tournament games, and doesnt like studying openings. But this is what i do...do:

CT-ART 3.0, and tactics trainer here for tactics

3 Chess Mentor lessons a day

Im currently studying

Chess Training for Post-beginners: A Basic Course in Positional Understanding

100 Endgames You Must Know

I use the Computer Workout, Daily Puzzle here.

It is what it is...its something i have settled on because i enjoy this form of studying.  I dont feel required, or obligated.  I study, what and when i want to.
