The October 2016 issue of Chess lists the top twenty openings compiled from a list of 1874 August games where both players were rated over 2400 Elo. One can not take position on this list too seriously because it is greatly influenced by how the openings are grouped. For example, all the Retis are grouped together, while English is separated into 1 ... c5, 1 ... e5, etc. Nevertheless, for what it is worth, some of the list entries report: 66 Najdorf Sicilians, 60 Caro Kanns, 48 2 Nf3 d6 sideline Sicilians, 46 Berlin Ruy Lopezes, 40 Kan Sicilians, and 35 Taimanov Sicilians.

If you're rated below ~1700 here and you're looking to improve, you should learn how to play 1.e4 e5 first.

There is no best opening against e4. Do not attempt to think that way.

Black has many fantastic ways to respond to e4 and they all have the potential to evolve into a winning position.

c6 if you have a mean endgame, e6 is annoying too.

id like to knowif theirs a line with f5? because if if it takes the pawn structure becomes offbalance.can black  win f5?

You can do f5 but I don't think it's very sound. It's called a birds opening or something like that.

Most folks are better off not messing around with their f pawn....especially as the first move of the game.

If they for some reason happen to then move the g pawn to g5, there's a mate with Qh5.

f5 is good for other lines ,not much for e4.

I have had great success with 1...C5, leading to a Sicilian. You can pick your favorite variation, but my favorite are the Sicilian accelerated Dragon variation, and the Sicilian Najdorf variation, which is a favorite of the Grandmasters. I have stopped playing 1...E5 because of the Ruy Lopez, which I can't stand to play as black, although it is awesome as white
