At first I think that puzzles or calculation in general is overrated. experience and intuition is much more important and stronger. but if you calculate something it should be correct. thats sure. In my eyes the best puzzles you should solve are mating puzzles. The puzzles should be from real games. At least from the pre-computer-era because what in modern games partly happens is not human at all. Such puzzles are worthless because no human can play like this. Studies are also worthless because in general there they search a solution where you can bring your opponent in Zugzwang (if it is a mating puzzle). But such a thing will never happen in a real game. Mate in 2,3 and 4 moves are good. First I registered that most people even very strong players are weak in this area. Second if you are able to solve mate puzzles you can solve everything else too. because every tactical motiv is needed to solve these puzzles. And last but not least mating patterns are important in every game you play. while some of the normal puzzle patterns you see in a game you will probably never see again.
If you wanna improve your calculation skill you must improve your visualization and your memory for the position. you can practice this for example in the chess program Chessmaster by Ubisoft. You can download this program for free. But I have no idea if this is legal. But I think officially Ubisoft does not sell this program anymore.
And there is a very good book where you can improve this too. "Cognitiv Chess" by the Russell publisher. In this book you learn and practice to play blindfolded. And there are also over 200 very instructive miniatures about every opening integrated.
