What's the best a player could be that shows up on the OTB scene out of nowhere? Could a player play online for years, then show up and be a master level OTB player right away?

I just signed up with the USCF and I've already beaten 1800+ players OTB in tournaments.  I doubt I'm master strength though.  I don't have an official ranking until I play more tournament games.

If he has never played long OTB games before, he will need to adapt to the format, so I think 2000 is a maximum.

If he has already played informal long training games against strong club players (the stronger, the better), then maybe a little more.

However, even with massive online experience and study, I'd expect most players to land in the 1500-1800 rating range when they start playing OTB.

I landed at 1550. But there are probably better ones. But I agree with you that 2000 is probably the max. 2000 is crazy good already anyways :)

Do you all realize who Petermh5 is??

No.

Click on his username and look at what thread he started. Then try to remember when was the last time you saw him on the forums.

Yeah, I did.  Guess my memory isn't so good.  I mean it's familiar but I don't really remember.  You say it as if he's someone really important that when I remember I'll be all "OMG it's him!"

Well, he is pretty important... I think it's safe to say that no single thread created after his has generated such a large-scale response throughout the chess.com community as his thread did (the Daeth thread was before his thread).

OMG! I have played 3 times with him. I didn´t even remember when was that.

It is all relative.  2000 is a good player for most of us of course!  Especially for me!
But someone with a rating of 2000 will definately be unable to make a living playing chess.  Except maybe teaching.  He would be a very strong player in a club scenario, or some low rated tournaments, no more.

My coach who reached 2350 FIDE in 1993 (probably equal to around 2500 nowadays)  played against very strong players, he beat a some GM's in his days as well.

He told me it was very very hard and demanding to make a living out of playing tournament chess!  He does teach, and has coached junior olimpic Argentine teams, etc.  But does not compete because he would need all of his life dedicated to chess.  He went on to study psychology and now makes a living out of that too.

I think nowadays if you are below 2300+ you are not competitive to play chess to make a living.  But that is just an opinion

For most people it will always stay a hobby, so making a living from it is usually not the main point for someone with a Rating of 2000.
