Better Chess Players = L brained or R brained?

Want to help with a Science Project on Chess? Here is my son's request:

Hi everyone, this is (C). I am doing a science project to find out if people who are left-brained are better chess players than people who are right-brained. Could you please help me? I just need to know two things -- 1 if you are more right-brained or more left-brained, and 2 how good you are at chess, or your Elo Rating.

If you don’t already know either of these things, please take a quick test to find out. Links are below. Then please report back to me by commenting below. Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help! I will share my results with you at the end if you want.

1- LEFT BRAIN/RIGHT BRAIN TEST: http://personality-testing.info/tests/OHBDS/ (20 agree/disagree questions. Should take about 1 or 2 minutes.)

2- CHESS SKILL LEVEL TEST: You can choose which one you like better. http://www.elometer.net/34 diagrams and you get 30 seconds maximum for each one. Click on pieces to move them. Easy and fun. Probably a little more accurate than the other test but kind of long. http://www.chessmaniac.com/ELORating/ELO_Chess_Rating.shtml 10 diagrams but no timer. They say to take 5 minutes or less on each one. You could probably do them in one minute or less! You have to enter start/end coordinates (like b3, c4) for each move but it’s pretty easy. Seems a lot faster to take this test than the other test.

Again, please just report back to me with 1- if you’re L or R brained, and 2- your Elo score. Thank you!

1. Left brained
2. 1731 (based off of elometer.net and it gave a range of 1530-1930, not sure if that matters, but just in case you need it!)

If you're doing a science project, start by refuting the L/R-brain notion, since it was pretty much a trend and has been refuted years ago. Maybe change it to people associated with that known model.

Axer of Questions, thanks for your help!

Khallyx, thanks for your input -- we did take that into account, but for simplicity's sake (and since this is purely the idea of my 5th grade son who cares more about chess than about neurological categorizations), we thought we'd just do it this way...  Laughing

If anyone knows anyone else who might give us more data, please send them our way! It's refreshing having input from actual chess players!!

I have a good one for you. I am ambidextrous (nearly 50/50). I can write, paint and draw with both hands at the same time. I also resently discovered that I move the chess pieces with either hand depending on how I determined the move (i.e. with every calculated move, my right is used; with every intuitive move, my left hand is used).

Now, according to personality test, I am a Grinder.

According to the elometer, it rated my at 1630 with a range of 1412 - 1847. This is after a year and a half of serious playing.

This sounds like cool project for a kid. Have fun with it.

Don't base your project on a myth.

Thanks, kellypk417! akafett, that really is fascinating.  Seems to make sense -- how interesting you have seen it play out!  btickler, thanks for your input. We are aware of the controversy but are sticking to the L/R brain idea for now...keeps things simpler for a 10-year old who couldn't think of any other way to incorporate chess into a science project, you know? Laughing
