Play games. Solve problems. Read books. You might start with "Play Winning Chess" by Seirawan. "Invitation to Chess" or "Logical Chess: Move by Move" by Chernev are both excellent. Books by Pandolfini are also good. Good luck!
play and learn from mistakes
do the tactics solving (3 a day for non premium members - unlimited for premium members) I find it helps you see the board and work on combinations using sacrifices. When playing turn based games on line, use the conditional moves to work out how the situation can develop...... try the vote chess..... I just started doing that, and it is interesting how the better players show me combinations that I would not have considered......
I agree with bodhi regarding reading books. he mentioned some excellant ones; one he did not that I really have been impressed with is "the search for chess perfection II" from CJS Purdy. Others may laugh at me for saying this, but with any of the books (just like in the moves button on your games) it will refer to the moves using the letters/numbers, buy a board that has the letters/numbers, and set it up so you can follow along while reading...... this site has good deals on books as well as chess sets. I recommend a travel set that comes with the pieces and roll up board in a canvas case by Drueke - get the one that has the thicker board that is like a mouse pad (you will be glad you did). This is a full size board, don't be thrown by my "travel set" description. When you are not using it at home, keep it in your car. You will be amazed at the opportunities to play with people you have just met, or friends that you did not realize played. I have found myself playing in hotel lobbies, rest areas, casinos and resturants with perfect strangers!
I like you started playing again recently...... My nephew beat me over Thanksgiving, which was the first time I had played in 30 years. But nevertheless, I still expected to win and I hate losing. I started playing after that and have not lost to him since! However, lol, that does not mean I can get cocky..... I have lost more games here than I have won. Play as often as possible vs the higher rated players.... watch what they are doing to gain position and put you in those "damned if I do damned if I don't" situations.
ok u chess players out there i just got back into the game ,need some advice on hoe to excute a solid performance so i can capture the wins from which i believe i should accomplish!!!!!
